The Merchant Marine Engineer Officer should expect very often inpections of Port State Control - PSC, such as the Coast Guard, during the port stay of a vessel, at any port all over the world. Find bellow a list with the most common issues that usually the Coast Guard checks onboard a vessel.
- Steering gear: All the engine crew is familiar with the emergency operation of the steering gear, how to operate the steering gear locally. The steering gear area must be very clean and no oil leaks must be observed
- Bilge wells: The grids of the wells must be closed, and there must be no noticed oil spills on the surface of the bilge water.
- Fire dampers: The dampers of the supply fans of the engine room to be able to close all together from the safety station.
- Rubber matts: Must be provided rubber matts at the floor, in front of all the electrical panels on board the ship.

- Workshop: The machinery of the workshop, such as the lathe, the permanent grinding machine, and the permanent drilling machine must be provided with gloves, mask and goggles next to each machinery, ready for use. Further, the grinding machine must be provided with newly installed stone and brush.
- Fire doors: All the fire doors inside the engine room must be closed, such as the door entranceto the purifiers room.
- Auxuliary Boiler: It is going to take place a test of the auxuliary boiler if it stoppes due to water low level alarm
- Emergency Fire Pump: The pump must be able to be started from the bridge, or the fire station or the local area of the pump and to be able to supply with sea water during the same time on fire hose at the forcastle and one at the after mooring station of the vessel.
- Emergency Diesel Generator: All the crew must be familiar how to start the engine with the manual procedure. The Coast Guard is going to ask the crew to make a demonstration of a black out, and this is completed by making an auto start test to the generator.
- Fire Drill: A fire drill is very possible to take place, and all the crew members must now their personal duties. Usually after that, an abandon ship drill takes place.

What else do you have to add in this list that was not mentioned? Such as Sewage treatment. Incinerator test, etc ? Write in comments.
