How to find the Volume, Density and Temperature of the fuel.

During measuring the quantity of a fuel tank on board, we are going to learn how to find the volume in cubic meters. We will learn how to find the density at 15 degress Celsius of this fuel. We will learn how to find the temperature of the fuel. With purpose to input all these 3 data inside the automatic BUNKER SURVEY CALCULATION excel file that it was explained how to use it, on our previous video.

When we want to measure the quantity of a fuel tank on board, and to find the volume in cubic meters, we must first to know how much is the total ullage depth of this tank. With purpose to find this we open the manual book named sounding table and we can find that it is equal to 21.77 meters for our desired tank. After that there are two options how to complete the measurent. By the sounding method where the measuring tape must touch until down at the bottom of the tank and finding so the sounding value, or by the ullage method, where the measuring tape must touch until the surface of the fuel, finding so the ullage value. Both methods are going to tell you how much cubic meters are inside the tank and of course the results are excactly the same.

For example we found that the sounding value is 0.10 meters equals to 10 centimeters. We go to sounding book and we find that this is equals to 19.5 cubic meters always for zero trim, meaning that the vessel is even keel not being by astern or by ahead. Or we calculate 21.77 meters minus 0.10 meters equals to 21.67 meters.

So, we found that the ullage value is 21.67 meters. And we open again the manual sounding book and we look that is excactly the same 19.5 cubic meters. So we found one of the three data that we need.

The second data we need is the density of the fuel in the tank at 15 degrees Celsius which can be found written of the Bunker Delivery Note that the barge supplied to us. And for example it is 0.8577 kg/m3 So we found 2 of the three data that we need.
And the third data we need is to find the temperature of the fuel how much it is during the measurement, and this can be found by using a measuring tape which has also a thermometer installed of you can find the temperature reading on the instruments inside the Engine Control Room. and for example it is 30.2 degrees Celsius. So we found three of the three data that we need.

And now you are ready to read this next article, that we show you and input these three data to this free excel file and TRANSFROM THE CUBIC METERS TO METRIC TONS.
